It is the first visible element of the Hollyhock House campus upon entrance to the park. Phase 1 of the Residence A restoration project began in 2017 and cost more than $5 million from various sources including City dollars, funding from the former Community Redevelopment Agency, and the National Park Service. As part of Phase 1, exterior finishes were meticulously recreated, structural and seismic work was completed, and building systems were improved. The planned Phase 2 will provide critical interior detailing, furnishings, finishes, and infrastructure repair, as well as exterior landscaping and ADA‐commensurate hardscaping needed to re-open the site to the public. Wright turned to pre-Columbian Mexico for inspiration for the project, giving the home’s exterior the look of an ancient temple.

As with many of Wright's residences, Hollyhock House has an "introverted" exterior with windows that seem hidden from the outside, and is not easy to decode from the outside. The house is arranged around a central courtyard with one side open to form a kind of theatrical stage (never used as such), and a complex system of split levels, steps and roof terraces around that courtyard. Water is meant to flow from a pool in the courtyard through a tunnel to this inside moat, and out again to a fountain. The house has served various purposes, including a fifteen-year run as the headquarters of the California Art Club beginning in 1927.

A series of rooftop terraces expanded living space to the outdoors—an idea not very practical in Wisconsin or Illinois, but one that Frank Lloyd Wright embraced in southern California. Barnsdall bought Olive Hill in 1919 from the widow of the man who had planted the olive trees. Wright eventually came up with grand plans that suited Barnsdall's theatricality, although she and her daughter never lived in the house that Wright built. After a major restoration by the City (1974 to 1976) it became a public museum.
