Nowadays I usually work on numerous ideas at once for the same topic or project, getting progressively more experimental as I go along. Then I go back and fine tuning the ones that feel the most effective. Such an approach defied tradition when it first appeared, but was prescient in terms of how we do so much of our reading on screens today, catching headlines, moving to videos and animated GIFs, skimming lists and infographics. Media has become more about reading ideas than reading words, which is something McLuhan recognized and Carson visualized using technologies that preserved remnants of human touch.
Carson came to graphic design relatively late in life. He was a competitive surfer—ranked eighth in the world—and a California high-school teacher when, at age 26, he enrolled in a two-week commercial design class. Discovering a new calling, he briefly enrolled at a commercial art school before working as a designer at a small surfer magazine, Self and Musician. He then spent four years as a part-time designer for the magazine Transworld Skateboarding, which enabled him to experiment. His characteristic chaotic spreads with overlapped photos and mixed and altered type fonts drew both admirers and detractors. Who was Aline Barnsdall?
“Hollyhock House is one of Los Angeles’ greatest cultural treasures — a landmark elegantly rendered from Frank Lloyd Wright’s imagination and Aline Barnsdall’s vision,” said Mayor Eric Garcetti. “The history of this home and its excellent craftsmanship will inspire Angelenos for generations to come, and Hollyhock House’s well-deserved place on UNESCO’s World Heritage List is a fitting tribute to this bold structure." Over the years, the residence fell into disrepair due to earthquakes and design faults. In the early 2000s, Project Restore undertook a significant renovation of the residence, and it reopened to the public in 2015. The massive fireplace is the home’s most drool-worthy feature, with its abstract Hollyhock motif etched into the cast concrete; the hearth was also meant for a grander purpose.
Drawn to the avant-garde, Barnsdall first met Wright when she was involved with an experimental theater troupe in Chicago. Moving to where the action was, Barnsdall made her way to the growing movie industry of southern California. The original intent of this hallway was to provide entry to the "private" wing of the house. Bedrooms with individual lavatories came off what was called an enclosed "pergola." Ceilings are hipped in these three main living areas—living room, music room, and library. In keeping with the theatricality of the property, the height of the living room ceiling is made more dramatic by sinking the area a full step from its surroundings.

Phase 1 of the Residence A restoration project began in 2017 and cost more than $5 million from various sources including City dollars, funding from the former Community Redevelopment Agency, and the National Park Service. As part of Phase 1, exterior finishes were meticulously recreated, structural and seismic work was completed, and building systems were improved. The planned Phase 2 will provide critical interior detailing, furnishings, finishes, and infrastructure repair, as well as exterior landscaping and ADA‐commensurate hardscaping needed to re-open the site to the public. As with many of Wright's residences, Hollyhock House has an "introverted" exterior with windows that seem hidden from the outside, and is not easy to decode from the outside. The house is arranged around a central courtyard with one side open to form a kind of theatrical stage (never used as such), and a complex system of split levels, steps and roof terraces around that courtyard. Water is meant to flow from a pool in the courtyard through a tunnel to this inside moat, and out again to a fountain. The house has served various purposes, including a fifteen-year run as the headquarters of the California Art Club beginning in 1927.

Wright eventually came up with grand plans that suited Barnsdall's theatricality, although she and her daughter never lived in the house that Wright built. Barnsdall Art Park on Olive Hill in Hollywood, California is now owned and run by the City of Los Angeles.
After a major restoration by the City (1974 to 1976) it became a public museum. It was among the first structures to be designated as a historic-cultural monument by the Los Angeles Cultural Heritage Commission in 1963. In doing so, she provided an accessible arts center to the community that incorporated and preserved the famous Hollyhock House as a crucial component. Aline Barnsdall’s pioneering vision gave birth to the California Modernism movement and helped grow the careers of notable architects including Wright, Schindler, and Neutra — all of whom were instrumentally involved in the project. Wright is widely considered to be the greatest American architect of the 20th century, and the sites in the group inscription span his influential career. The improvements also included a major restoration of a guest house, known as “Residence A.” A cantilevered balcony on the north side of the structure, which had fallen away, has been fully re-created, with a steel frame to ensure its longevity.
Like many houses designed by Wright, Hollyhock House proved to be better as an aesthetic work than as a livable dwelling. Water tended to flow over the central lawn and into the living room, and the flat roof terraces were conceived without an understanding of Los Angeles's rains. Exterior finishes long covered by multiple layers of paint have been restored to Wright’s original vision, including art stone that wraps around the building. Variously described as Mayan, Aztec, Asian, Egyptian, and as a “California Romanza” by the architect himself, the Hollyhock House was a transitional structure for Wright. The building bridges the Prairie style of the preceding decades and his textile block structures of the 1920s. Wright’s client, Aline Barnsdall, was the heir of one of the largest independent oil producers in the United States. A fiercely independent feminist who was immersed in the world of experimental theater, Aline flouted convention, first approaching Wright at the height of his personal scandals.

The Hollyhock House, located in the East Hollywood neighborhood, was completed between 1919 and 1921 and is considered one of Wright’s most important early works in Southern California. There are more than 1,000 World Heritage sites around the world, and the group of Wright sites is now among only 24 sites in the United States. In 1927, Barnsdall gave Hollyhock House, 12 acres, and the Residence A guest house to the City of Los Angeles. Now with two Wright-designed houses, the Municipal Art Gallery, a theater, and art centers (all operated by the City’s Department of Cultural Affairs), Barnsdall Park has become the dynamic arts park that Aline Barnsdall had envisioned for Los Angeles. California captivated both Barnsdall and Wright, and here the architect had the opportunity to develop a new regional expression, which broke from the acclaimed Prairie style he had developed in the Midwest. He took inspiration from building precedents native to the Southwest—the Pre-Hispanic and the Pueblo.
Every major room in Hollyhock House has access to exterior space, and the Barnsdall Library is no exception. After passing through the 500 pound cast concrete doors to the Hollyhock House, the visitor is met with an open floor plan that defined Frank Lloyd Wright's architecture for years to come.
